EXCLUSIVE: Emmerdale star warns John ‘is more unhinged than ever’ as he explains return
Villain John Sugden’s Emmerdale return has been confirmed, and now the actor who plays him has teased what triggers his comeback.

Just months ago, killer John went on the run as his crimes were exposed. Before he fled, he dragged his husband Aaron Dingle off of a clifftop, trying to kill him and planning on framing his brother, Aaron’s soulmate, Robert Sugden.
Since his disappearing act, Aaron and Robert have reconciled, but it seems they could face danger once more. John has been confirmed as one of the characters in the Coronation Street crossover, called Corriedale.

He told us: “The rumour is true, uh-oh! Corriedale has been such a huge set piece, it’s taken much longer to film than the normal double episodes. So the prep and the filming started way back in August or September time.
“So I knew that my character was going on the run and I knew what he was coming back to do.” Addressing John’s reasoning to come back, Oliver warned that the villain would be more “unhinged” than ever before when we see him again after so long on the run.
He shared: “I think love ultimately brings him back, and jealousy brings him back. He feels like he has got far less to lose this time, and so we might see a slightly more dishevelled and unhinged side to John. Not that he can get anymore unhinged, but he’s even more unhinged.”
Oliver’s thrilled to be back on the show and to be in Corriedale, given he starred in Coronation Street as Andy Carver between 2014 and 2017. Oliver said: “I am super excited. I’ve been in Coronation Street in the past and now I’ve been on Emmerdale.
“Now I get to do the mashup. In terms of iconic TV, I really think it’s an absolute privilege to be a part of. It’s amazing. To come back has been like a warm embrace. I’ve loved it.”
Teasing the crossover episode, Oliver hinted that there were things fans may not expect to happen, and more than one big twist planned. He shared: “I think by this point it’s known there are big stunts involved that are filmed at night time.

“It looks stunning. That’s the action part of it, but the human part of it, there’s pathos, there’s classic Corrie and Emmerdale humour, there’s also huge twists. There’s really huge twists and not just one.”
